Guardiola equals Cruyff, is The Disciple better than The Master? >> Read My Mind

After the conquest of the 2011/12 Spanish Supercopa, Pep Guardiola has equalled Johan Cruyff’s tally of ELEVEN trophies as Barça coach. But who’s the better manager?

Johan Cruyff is, undeniably, a key figure in FC Barcelona’s history. After a successful player career, where The Skinny Dutch scored 61 goals in 5 seasons, he rejoined us in 1988 as coach. His attacking philosophy and love for possession football made our club win 11 titles in 8 years.

When Pep Guardiola took aver from Frank Rijkaard as Barça coach, many were uncertain about his ability to handle such a high profile dressing room – including me! Yes, he had won everything as a player (under Cruyff, of course) but his only coaching experience was in Segunda Division B… Luckily for us though, doubters were proved wrong very quickly, with Guardiola equalling Johan’s 11 titles in just 4 seasons – and counting!

Cruyff changed the way football was understood in Barcelona and made us consistently successful, winning our first Champions League in 1992. Years later, and despite not officially working for FCB anymore, he is obviously influencing Pep as an advisor. Guardiola has now won as many titles as his Master and, in my opinion, the current team perfects what Johan designed in the early 1990s.

So: Who’s the better manager? Well, it’s impossible for me to decide. I feel answering this questions is as difficult as being faced with ‘Who do you love more, mummy or daddy?’ dilemma – You need them both and couldn’t be where you are without them.
