Barcelona were left with a mountain to climb to win the Spanish Super Cup after being humiliated by Athletic Bilbao at the San Mames (4-0) in a night in which the only positive for the Catalans was the referee’s final whistle.

Barca suffered their most embarrassing defeat since the 7-0 aggregate defeat to Bayern Munich in May 2013, and the hopes of lifting a record-equalling sextuple are now little more than a distant dream.

Barcelona are clearly struggling with both physical and mental fatigue, which is never a good sign but an even more worrying one when it comes before the league campaign has even started. Competing for two official titles during the summer, together with the contractual obligations of their USA tour, has certainly not done them any favours.
