Lionel Messi, Barcelona right to remain silent over poor refereeing

Barcelona players are becoming increasingly worried about the many mistakes that referees are committing during their games. While errors of judgement are clearly part of football, it is clear that the have been too many key decisions that have gone against Luis Enrique’s men in recent times.

Despite currently sitting as joint leaders at the top of La Liga with a perfect six out of a possible six points added so far, there is growing concern in Barcelona. Gerard Pique’s four-match ban in the Supercopa final for supposedly insulting the referee is controversial to say the least. Aritz Aduriz was allowed to injure both Sergio Busquets and Dani Alves in Week 1 without being shown a single yellow card. In what may have been (or not) a mere coincidence, the referee ignored two clear penalty calls inside Malaga’s area after a clear handball after a Neymar dribble and another obvious foul on Luis Suarez.

While Barcelona could certainly have a case to argue, I strongly believe that constant complaints against the referee’s’ decisions will not bring anything positive to the Camp Nou. In fact, the Blaugranas would be much more likely to get future decisions going against them as a punishment if they do — so is the nature of Spanish football, I’m afraid.

Luis Enrique’s men, while clearly frustrated behind close doors, are right to remain silent on the matter in front of the media — while they prepare to talk on the pitch in their next match!

The Quote: “I see the Liga title race dangerously prepared for Real Madrid, sadly. Winning the title would be dangerously complicated for any team other than Real Madrid because it can’t happen that Real Madrid wins only one league after seven years.” — Diego Simeone, Atletico Madrid manager.
