Why Antoine Griezmann was not considered by Barcelona this summer

Antoine Griezmann has signed a now signed a new deal with Atletico Madrid and therefore rejected the offer to join forces with Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.

Although Griezmann’s move to Old Trafford seemed hugely likely only a couple of weeks ago, the CAS decision to ban Atletico from signing new players became a decisive factor in the French international’s decision to stay in Madrid.

While Griezmann was not necessarily linked with a move to Barcelona this summer, I must admit I was quite surprised that a forward of his quality, experience and potential had not even been considered by the Camp Nou giants. This must be due to the fact that, as we have discussed at length at ‘The Barcelona Podcast’, the Catalans have their sights set on investing heavily to add a starting midfielder and a reliable right-back.
